The Beginning of My Missionary Service (2017)

    Der Beginn meines Missionsdienstes (2017)

He returned to this account after a decade. This is the later text, written in 2017, and his last word on it. The wording of the two is almost the same, but the content is not: twenty-five passages stand only in the draft of 2007 and eighteen only in this one. He added some things and set others aside.

The earlier text of 2007 is published here in full alongside it, so that the passages he set aside are not lost.

    • Khaksar means "this humble one". He used it throughout in place of "I".
    • Huzoor is a term of respect for the Khalifa, and here means whichever Khalifa was living at the time being described.
    • The Silsila means the Community.
    • Markaz means the centre, the Community’s headquarters.

The Beginning of My Preaching Period

Immediately after graduating from Jamia 1؂, a new era began for us. Our class consisted of six students: (1) Sahibzada Mirza Hanif Ahmad Sahib 2؂, (2) Syed Abdul Hayee Sahib 3؂, (3) Brother Sultan Mahmood Anwar Sahib 4؂, (4) Brother Bashir Ahmad Sahib Shad 5؂, (5) Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad Sahib 6؂, and this humble one, Fazl-e-Ilahi Anwari. Out of these, three students were designated for Anjuman 7؂, and the latter three for Anjuman Tehrik-e-Jadid. In this respect, as it were, this humble one along with the other two students was under Tehrik-e-Jadid. Thus, after taking the examination of Darja Rabia, which was the final class of Jamia at that time, the three of us were sent to the Office of -e-Tabshir through the Office of Wakalat-e-Diwan. Now we had, as it were, regularly become "Muballigh", or had been deemed entitled to be called "Muballigh". I do not know what work was assigned to my two friends in the Office of Wakalat-e-Tabshir, but the first work assigned to me was that I should go and bring Tabshir's mail from the post office. Probably whichever assistant worker there was had gone for some other work. At that time, the Office of Tabshir had moved into its permanent present building, but the post office was still in its old, very first building constructed of unbaked bricks, which was located approximately at the place opposite the Office of Majlis -ul-Ahmadiyya Markaziyya (now Pakistan) and where Anas Market is built at present.

At that time, the staff of Wakalat-e-Tabshir consisted of Vakil-ut-Tabshir (Mukarram Sahibzada Mirza Mubarak Ahmad Sahib) and two deputies, one of whom was Hasan Muhammad Khan Sahib (currently in America) and the second was Maulvi Basharat Ahmad Sahib (known as Sindhi), former missionary of West Africa. Among them, the former was the supervisor of European and American missions, and the latter was the supervisor of African and Indonesian missions. Most of our missions were in these very countries. Just a few days after my arrival at Wakalat-e-Tabshir, my posting was made to Ghana. The written order that was received was only this much, that I should prepare to go to Ghana. Verbally it was also learned that there was an Arabic school there, the charge of which I was to take over after arriving there. Since details were not provided, naturally a curiosity arose in me to find out what kind of school it was, where it was, what its educational standard was, whether it was dedicated only to the teaching of Arabic or if some other subject would also be included in the syllabus, etc. Therefore, this humble self wrote a letter to Mukarram Vakil-ut-Tabshir Sahib to obtain this information. The reply received was that the school was in Ghana at the place "Swedro" (swedro). The remaining details I should obtain by coming to the office myself. When I arrived at the office for this purpose, I was asked to meet Mukarram Maulvi Basharat Ahmad Bashir Sahib. When I met him, he told me that look, that school is in Swedro. It is a very good place. Our Jamaat is also established there. And regarding the rest of the school, you will find out everything after reaching there. These were the "details" that were given to me in the office. In fact, as was learned later, the office itself did not know anything more than this. In any case, I was told to prepare for the journey as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the Tabshir office gave me an additional piece of information regarding the journey: namely, that before reaching Ghana (West Africa), I would stay in Damascus for 6 months so that I could gain proficiency in the Arabic language there; and that the journey from Karachi to Damascus would be by land route, for which I would have to travel through Iran and Iraq by bus or rail. To make all the arrangements for this, the Sahib stationed in Karachi was being written to. Why this route was prescribed for me—neither was anything told to me about it, nor did I have the courage to inquire. I was a , and it was expected of me that I present an example of *Sam'an wa Ta'atan*. And so it was.

The news of my program of going abroad reached my parents (who were still residing in ), my brothers, sisters, my family, as well as my friends and the people of the neighborhood. And all of them, in their own way, began preparing to say goodbye to me. The very first farewell party, which held great significance because Hazrat Al-Musleh Al-Maud (may Allah be pleased with him) also attended it, was organized by . This party, which was held near the bridge of the River Chenab on the sandy portion above its western bank, was actually in the form of a picnic which was decided to be held at the River Chenab according to the wish and arrangement of the principal at that time, Janab Maulana Abul Ata Sahib Jalandhari (late). In fact, the program for this picnic had been decided long before, and the respected Principal Sahib's idea was that in this open atmosphere, the students of Jamia, upon whose shoulders the burden of the reformation of the nations of the world was to be placed in the near future, would be provided an opportunity for the physical and spiritual proximity to Hazrat Al-Musleh Al-Maud (may Allah be pleased with him). When the respected Principal Sahib was informed about 's program of departing for foreign countries, he said, "You come as well; in this way, your farewell party will also take place."

    ¶6

The details of the program of this party have faded from memory at this time, but this much is remembered that, completely free from formalities, this pleasant and easy-going program of 3–4 hours contained within itself a beautiful blend of literature and humor. A student from Fiji(?), Jumman Bakhsh, told a few jokes in his broken Urdu language, one of which was about how people in China name their children. When a child is born, they place three iron rods in the fire. When they become thoroughly hot and turn red, they hold them and dip them into water. Then whatever kind of sound comes out of them, that very name is given to the child. For example, Choon, Chaan, Chee, etc. The purpose of telling this joke was actually to joke with a Chinese student, Brother Usman Cheeni Sahib 1. The students, of course, kept rolling with laughter. also kept smiling greatly. Similarly, Usman Cheeni Sahib himself was asked to deliver a speech in Urdu. Since his specific Urdu pronunciation, which created a strange delight for the listener, was a joke in itself, his entire speech proved to be a "gol gappa" of laughter for all those present. Those friends who have seen him would know that he still cannot pronounce "g" and "ṛ". The topic of his speech was probably "Dua", in which the word "girgirane" occurred repeatedly. But from his tongue, only "karkaraana" would come out, which created great delight. The most interesting part was a speech by Brother Qureshi Nasir Ahmad (Shaheed Marhoom), in which he recited excerpts from the speeches of some scholars of the in their very own specific tone and accent. And he presented them with such skill that it became evident on its own whose speech it was. Among them were included excerpts of speeches (with Huzoor's permission) of Mukarram Hazrat Chaudhry Muhammad Zafarullah Khan Sahib (ra), some teachers of Jamia, the Principal Sahib himself, as well as Hazrat Musleh-e-Mao'ud (ra) himself, hearing which Huzoor was also greatly amused and praised Qureshi Sahib's skill.

Sometime during the program, respected Principal Sahib submitted in the service of Huzoor (ra) that he (pointing towards the humble one) was soon about to depart for Damascus. Among the advices Huzoor (ra) gave on this occasion, regarding learning the Arabic language he stated that, firstly, do not meet your own people (meaning your Urdu or Punjabi speakers), but rather socialize with Arabs as much as possible; otherwise, even if you stay for years and years, you will not learn the language. Secondly, instead of heavy literary books, read light literature of the nature of stories. This is because a literary book tires the mind quickly, but while reading a story, a person does not tire. Thirdly, reading such books just once will not be enough, but rather read them many, many times. The first time, a person interest

In this way, you will become acquainted with the idioms of the language. Regarding himself, he stated, "I read an English novel eighteen times." Fourthly, he stated that along with the effort to speak, one should develop the practice of thinking in Arabic.

These precious counsels of Huzoor proved to be very helpful for Khaksar in learning the Arabic language and later the German language.

The second farewell reception was from the people of the neighborhood (Dal-ul-Barakat). This humble one, besides being the only graduate of his neighborhood, was the General Secretary of the neighborhood and the first Zaeem of Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya of the Dar-ul-Barakat neighborhood. (The establishment of Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya Dar-ul-Barakat came into being through the efforts of this humble one). These were three separate receptions: from the people of the neighborhood, from Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya, and from Majlis Atfal-ul-Ahmadiyya. The Sadr of the neighborhood, Raja Zia-ud-Din Sahib¹ (late and forgiven), respected this humble one very much because of his being a Waqf-e-Zindagi. With great love, he organized a dinner invitation and bade me farewell with his prayers. Similarly, the other two parties were also a reflection of the love and devotion of the Khuddam and Atfal of the neighborhood of that time.

A few days before the departure, which took place on some date in the month of February 1956, two elders of the Silsila specifically invited me to their homes and blessed me with their sincere prayers and advice. Among them, the first elder was Mukarram Chaudhry Muhammad Sharif Fazil, former missionary to Palestine and currently Professor at , and the second was Mukarram Maulvi Rashid Ahmad Sahib Chughtai, former missionary to Arab countries. Both had been blessed with the opportunity to stay in Syria for some time and become acquainted with the Jamaat there. Both of these gentlemen gave me advice in their own respective ways and also prayed for the success of my journey, for which I am thankful to these elders from the bottom of my heart.

Just as the thought of this humble one's separation for years was extremely testing of patience for this humble one's parents and wife, it was no less than a spiritual shock for another venerable personality as well. His name is Professor Akhund Abdul Qadir. The late Akhund Sahib had great love for me right from the beginning, that is, ever since this humble one was admitted to in , some account of which this humble one has already mentioned in the context of his student days. This relationship of love and affection remained intact even after the college moved to Lahore and later to . Although after passing the B.Sc. examination in 1950, this humble one's connection with T.I. College had practically ended, the late Akhund Sahib still treated this humble one with the same love. After freeing himself from college engagements, he would often arrive at this humble one's house—which in the neighborhood consisted merely of a single room—call out to me, and then ask me to come along with him. As we walked, we would converse sometimes on some college topic, sometimes on some aspect of his family life, and sometimes on some scholarly, political, or geographical topic. Mostly my role was merely that of a listener. The scope of his reading, scholarly erudition, and general knowledge was so vast that, considering this affection of his a boon, I would try to benefit fully from him. His purpose, besides expressing his love, was also to increase my knowledge. As we walked, we would sometimes reach a tea stall and, sitting face to face, enjoy tea for hours. Sometimes for the sake of a walk, we would step outside the various settlements of Rabwah (which at that time mostly consisted of Halqas A, B, and C, and was situated almost entirely to the west of the hill between the railway line and the paved Lyallpur-Sargodha road) and head towards the fields. This was almost our daily routine. As soon as the program for my departure was finalized, he began to remain very sad. I do not remember if he expressed this state of his in words, but from his conversation I could well gauge the condition of his heart.

My life partner [1], whose sole support in life was I myself, but this servant of Allah never even once said, "Now what will become of me?" Rather, what she said, through both her state and speech, was an expression of the words of that righteous woman who, upon hearing from her venerable husband that he was leaving her and the piece of his heart in a barren and waterless valley purely for the sake of Allah, said, "Then Allah will never let us go to waste." Our daughter Hafsa was only four years old at that time. The responsibility of this innocent child, who was receiving upbringing and care with an equal share of parental love and comfort, was now also going to fall entirely upon her mother. Neither my parents nor any of my brothers or sisters were present in Rabwah at that time such that there could be hope of their support, nor did their circumstances permit them to come to Rabwah. As for my in-laws, there was no person among them who could support us in these circumstances of ours. Because first of all, whatever they were like, they lived in a far-flung village. Furthermore, they were uneducated, afflicted with hardship, homeless, and helpless. As for a brother, there had been none from the very beginning. There was only one younger sister who was a mother of six young children. Her being relieved of her own responsibilities was a separate issue. Her mother, that is my mother-in-law, however, was a person towards whom both our eyes turned when looking for material support. When a letter was written to her—she was living at her younger daughter's house at the time—she reached Rabwah in a few days. When she was told that I was going on a long journey, from where it would be difficult for me to return to my homeland before four or five years, she was left utterly stunned. This middle-aged woman, a village dweller unaware of the ups and downs of time, could only comprehend this much: that her son-in-law was going to a job in some far-off country, and that it was not possible for him to change this plan. She, who throughout her whole life had herself endured mountains of hardships, prepared herself to bear yet another hardship for her daughter. Since it was not possible for her to completely leave her younger daughter and come either, she did not promise that she would now stay in Rabwah, nor did we exact such a promise from her in view of these circumstances. Thus, it was agreed verbally that she, who was previously completely free from the responsibilities of this daughter, would also keep visiting her.

Before my departure, apart from my parents and brothers and sisters, some people from my maternal family had also arrived from Bhera to see me off. Thus, quite a hustle and bustle and liveliness was created in the house, which temporarily lightened the grief of the impending separation between us husband and wife. My wife had only one concern: that this journey of mine, the arduousness of which she did not fully comprehend, should be completed comfortably and safely. Whatever household items she thought could be of use to me on the journey, she started giving them to me. "Hafsa's father, keep this too, and keep that too." She even gave me many valuable things that she had received in her dowry. Some of these were lost forever. What I regret most is taking 3 months' advance salary with me at the insistence of Hafsa's mother, which every missionary going abroad could receive in advance according to the rules of the Tehrik at that time. Especially because a few weeks later, our second child was about to be born. It did not even occur to me that Hafsa's mother herself would be in greater need of the money than I was. There was no bank balance, nor were we familiar with such a thing. As for the monthly allowance (another name for the salary received by a Waqf-e-Zindagi), its state was such that despite all kinds of frugality, before the end of the month it would not only be exhausted, but an equal amount of debt would be accumulated. As if the allowance would be spent in paying off debts, and from the first date a new debt would begin. How that time of childbirth passed, which arrived nearly one month after my departure, I do not know to this day.

    ¶16

At that time, the scene of the departure of the missionaries held a special preparation within itself. A day or so before the day the missionary was to depart, an announcement would be made in the mosques on behalf of Wakalat Tabshir that today or tomorrow such-and-such Muballigh Sahib is departing outside Pakistan for I'laa-e-Kalimatullah; friends should see off this Mujahid brother of theirs at the railway station with prayers.

    ¶17

The day arrived for a similar announcement to be made regarding this humble servant as well. Departure usually took place on the Chenab Express, which departed from Rabwah for Karachi between 9 and 10 o'clock in the morning. During these office hours, workers from all offices and residents of the neighborhood would arrive at the railway station, and forming queues, they would shake hands with or embrace their missionary brother. According to the season, flower garlands were also put on him. Then, right before the train arrived, an elder from among those present would lead a prayer. Upon the train's arrival, the atmosphere would echo with slogans of Takbeer and "Islam Zindabad, Ahmadiyyat Zindabad", etc. This entire sight would become a center of considerable attention for the passengers aboard the train, and soon they would learn that a Mujahid of Islam was departing for a foreign country. This atmosphere would continue until the departure of the train. And thus, a missionary would be separated from his wife and children for four or five years.

    ¶18

To see me off, besides the office staff, residents of the neighborhoods, and other friends and acquaintances, all the students of Jamia and many students of Talim-ul-Islam College—not a single one of whom I even knew—had arrived carrying garlands of flowers. All this was due to the kindness of the late Professor Akhund Muhammad Abdul Qadir Sahib. Among the visitors, the meeting that deeply affected all those present was that of Professor Akhund Sahib. He embraced me so tightly and remained embraced for such a long time that all the onlookers were left astonished. Most, or perhaps even no one, knew of our mutual relationship, and how could they? I was an obscure student of Jamia; a period of 6 years had passed since I had left college. Among the college professors, except for a few whose student I had been, all the rest were new. And as for the old professors, they did know that I was among Akhund Sahib's dearest students, but I myself was counted among his dearest students. Therefore, those relations between the late Akhund Sahib and me, which were based on selfless love, no one else knew except for me and the late Akhund Sahib.

    ¶19

Thus, laden with flowers, Fazl-i-Ilahi Anwari, wearing a polite smile on his face among smiling faces, boarded the Chenab Express. He had no knowledge of what Hafsa's mother was going through. A depiction of this state was to some extent drawn in those letters that I began receiving from Umm Hafsa after reaching Damascus, or was learned from her own lips upon returning home after four years, which was roughly this:

    ¶20

After you boarded the vehicle, my condition became such as if there was no life left in me... I reached home with great difficulty... Before evening, the relatives also departed for their respective homes. The next day, Phuphi Ji (i.e. Khaksar's mother) also left for Bhera... Now there was Mother, myself, and my daughter Hafsa... Mother had cooked food... I had no appetite at all. I just went to sleep as I was... Hafsa clung to me the entire day... On the second day too, the condition was nearly the same... Seeing this condition of mine, Mother said, "If you grieve, it could harm the child." But as for me, I could not understand anything as to what had happened to me. Hafsa also became completely quiet... Sometimes she would ask: "Ammi, when will Abu come?"... If I had an answer to this question, I would give it. Instead of answering the question, a few tears would drop from my eyes.

    ¶21

Meanwhile, traveling by the Chenab Express, I reached Karachi on the second day. Respected Maulana Abdul Malik Khan Sahib¹ (late and forgiven) had come to the railway station to receive me. I reached Ahmadiyya Hall with him. When he learned that I was to travel by land, he was very surprised. He himself said, "Why do you not go by ship?" I said, "I have no objection, as long as Tabshir has no objection." He replied, "I will talk to Tabshir myself." I agreed with him by remaining silent. And in this way, by contacting a travel agency, he booked seats for a ship from Karachi to Basra, a railway from Basra to Baghdad, and a special coach from Baghdad to Damascus. Thus, I now had to reach the land of Syria (Al-Suriyah) via Iraq.

    ¶22

I did not have a visa for any of these countries, nor had any effort of this kind been made on behalf of Tabsheer. Probably at that time, a Pakistani did not need an advance visa to pass through these countries. However, since my plan was to stay in Damascus for 6–7 months, I had spoken to Wakalat Tabsheer before leaving Rabwah regarding the need for a visa for Syria, to which I was answered that I should talk to Mukarram Malik Mubarak Ahmad Sahib 1 (late) in this regard, because he was our advisor for the Middle East. (Mukarram Malik Sahib at that time had recently arrived in Pakistan after spending a period of time in Damascus). When I met Mukarram Malik Sahib, he said, there is no need. Al-Sayyid Muneer Al-Husni Sahib 2 will manage everything there. As such, there was nothing like a visa on my passport. Probably Mukarram Maulana Abdul Malik Sahib's attention also did not go towards the fact that at least regarding the visa for Syria, reassurance should be obtained. It could also be that time was short and I still had to fulfill other formalities such as obtaining permission from immigration etc. I remember that for as many days as I stayed in Karachi, the said Maulana Sahib kept taking me around here and there.

    ¶23

After all the formalities regarding the journey were completed, I boarded the ship from Karachi. Mukarram Maulana Abdul Malik Khan Sahib (late) remained with me from beginning to end, and after seeing me onto the ship, he bade me farewell and returned.

    ¶24

This nine-day journey from Karachi to Basra was such that during it, the memory of my family constantly tormented me. On board the ship, I did not find any acquaintance either with whom I could sit together and spend time. I spent most of my time reading. I had kept two volumes of Sair Ruhani with me. I kept reading them. Sometimes I would go to the upper open part of the ship and view the sea. In the evening, before sleeping, I would write down the day's observations. So, this was roughly my daily pursuit. I do not remember the name of the ship. But I remember this much: it was an oil tanker ship that stopped at some place along the way, where oil was loaded into it for several hours. I had a deck ticket, which meant there was no designated seat. Therefore, this entire journey passed in great discomfort anyway. I had only one consolation: that a gentleman would come to receive me in Basra, who had been informed from Karachi itself about the name of the ship, its date of arrival, my name, etc. All this arrangement was kindly made by Mukarram Maulana Abdul Malik Khan Sahib (late) himself.

    ¶25

As soon as the ship anchored in Basra, a gentleman came onto the deck of the ship asking for my name. Neither did I know him, nor did he recognize me. So, from my appearance, he must have guessed that Fazal Ilahi Anwari was indeed my name. As soon as he saw me, he said, "You are Anwari Sahib." He was my host, who had already received information from Karachi regarding my arrival in Basra. This gentleman, whose name I have unfortunately forgotten, was a Pakistani and was the owner of a very large commercial company in Basra. When he asked for my passport, I replied that an official of the ship had collected all the passports and taken them away. He faced great difficulty in searching for my passport, because it was not easy to search for one among two to two and a half hundred green-covered, identical-looking passports. Nevertheless, he found it. And then, taking me along, he brought me out of the ship, leaving the rest of the passengers in long queues. From this, I gathered that he had good influence with the port officials.

Upon reaching Basra and after resting a little at the host's house, I stepped out into the bazaar for a bit. First, I went to the post office so that I could send the recorded travelogue of my past nine days to my family. After this, passing through the streets and lanes of Basra while touring this historical city, I reached a tea house. I already knew Arabic, after all, I had studied it for four years in school and four years in Jamia. Exegeses of the Qur'an like Al-Kashshaf etc. and books of Sahah Ahadith

...did. Upon reaching Basra, it became known that in Arabic, tea is called Al-Shai. Thus, after a short while, tea arrived in a small glass cup that had more the look of a small glass tumbler than a cup. When I looked, it had neither milk nor sugar. Well, I ordered sugar by saying "Sukkar". When I asked for milk, the shopkeeper started staring at my face. I said again, "Al-Laban" is needed. He again stared at my face and began to smile. Meanwhile, I was amazed at what kind of Arab he was who did not understand "Laban". One or two other gentlemen sitting in the shop were also drinking tea without milk in the same kind of small glass tumblers. They too began to take an interest. They tried to explain something to me in Arabic, but I could not understand at all what they were saying. After much effort and using gestures and hints, I was finally able to make them understand what I wanted. At this, those people laughed out loud and said, "Al-Haleeb". Thus, the milk arrived. The reason was that in Arab countries, milk is called "Al-Haleeb". The word "Al-Laban" is used for yogurt. When I said that I needed "Al-Laban" to put in the tea, they were astonished as to whether yogurt is put into tea. So this was the first test of our Arabic. It was as if on the very first day, the illusion of my Arabic proficiency was completely exposed.

My stay in Basra was not very long. Probably on the second or third day, I boarded the train to go to Baghdad. At the Baghdad railway station, an Ahmadi merchant residing in Baghdad, Al-Haji Abdul Latif Sahib, had arrived to receive me. He had arranged my accommodation at a house with another Ahmadi elder, Mirza Barakat Ali of Abadan. Here, I also met some other Pakistani Ahmadi friends whose names have faded from my mind at this time.

My stay in Baghdad lasted for four days. From there, the journey to Damascus took place, as per the program, via a special coach running from Baghdad to Damascus. The details of this journey of a few hours have faded from my mind. However, I remember this much, that it was a very comfortable type of bus operated by a specific travel company between Baghdad and Damascus, in which all the travel amenities for passengers, such as food and drink and toilet facilities, etc., were taken care of. I reached my first destination, Damascus, around the time of Zuhr. And then, to reach the address given by Wakalat Tabshir, I arrived at Zawiyat al-Husni, Al-Shaghour, by means of a taxi.

I do not remember how my meeting with Al-Sayyid Muneer Al-Hussaini Sahib took place; whether he was present in the Zawiyah at that time or if I had to wait for him for some time. I also do not remember whether he had received any prior information from Rabwah regarding my arrival, but from my side, he had no specific information at all about my arrival. Therefore, when I met him, he was very surprised and expressed regret that I had not sent any information from Basra or Baghdad so that he could have come to receive me. He felt even more regret regarding Haji Abdul Latif Sahib, as he knew his address etc., and also that I was coming from the and was a Muballigh. He should have at least made a phone call to him after I had set off from there.

I saw Al-Sayyid Muneer Al-Husni Sahib for the first time when he came to Qadian for the first time, probably in 1945. At that time, I was a first-year student at Talim-ul-Islam College. Al-Sayyid Al-Husni Sahib stayed in Qadian for more or less one year. I used to meet him often in Masjid Mubarak. The meeting was only to the extent of a handshake because he was an Arab and could not converse in Urdu. Although I had studied Arabic for four years in school, I did not know how to speak Arabic beyond "Kayfa haluka". So at the time of meeting, after shaking hands, we would ask him about his well-being in Arabic. He would say "Alhamdulillah" and we would understand that the purpose of the meeting was fulfilled. Although ten or eleven years had passed since that meeting, in view of a faint image of his appearance that was still present in my mind till now, there was no feeling of any strangeness when meeting him. Meanwhile, Husni Sahib had learned to read and speak Urdu during his stay in Qadian. In this respect, mutual understanding was quite easy.

Soon after my arrival, meetings with the friends of the Damascus Jamaat also began. Among these friends, the one with whom I had the most contact was Al-Sayyid Abu Al-Faraj Al-Husni Sahib, the son of Al-Husni Sahib's elder brother. At that time, his age was 21 or 22 years, and he was completing the fixed period of mandatory service in the army. After performing his mandatory duty, he spent most of his time in the Zawiya. In most matters, he was the one who guided me. An ease I had in conversing with him was that he spoke with me in eloquent language, whereas other friends would mix words of the colloquial language with eloquent language, which in the beginning was very difficult for me to understand. Furthermore, he also had time. In this way, I benefited greatly from his companionship. Zawiya Al-Husni, which was the personal property of Al-Sayyid Munir Al-Husni Sahib's family, consisted of a very large hall and a few small rooms upstairs and downstairs. Among these, one room (or probably two rooms) was being used as a mosque. One room was used by Al-Sayyid Al-Husni Sahib as a kitchen. A small room, attached to which was also a small courtyard, became my kitchen. This same room had also been the kitchen of Mukarram Malik Mubarak Ahmad Sahib prior to me. In the remaining rooms, a few Ahmadi families who had come from Palestine had lived.

    ¶36

Since no room was vacant, the hall of Zawiya Al-Husni, which was actually a very large library, began to be used for my sitting, staying, and sleeping. During the day, this same hall was used as a meeting place. Small and large meetings of the Jamaat were also held here, and apart from the Friday prayer, this same hall was used for the remaining prayers.

    ¶37

At that time, there was a fairly substantial Jamaat in Damascus which consisted almost entirely of well-educated friends. One portion among them was those who had come from Palestine and settled here as refugees, and all the rest were Arab Ahmadis. Some of them, whose names have not been erased from my mind, were these:

    ¶38

    1. Al-Sayyid Muhammad Al-Husni. Elder brother of Al-Sayyid Muneer Al-Husni Sahib and father of Al-Sayyid Abu Al-Faraj, who although was not an Ahmadi, was not an opponent either; his age would be around 70.

    ¶39

    2. Al-Sayyid Badr Al-Husni. The younger brother of Al-Sayyid Muneer Al-Husni Sahib, who was a very big cloth merchant in Damascus. He himself and all his progeny were Ahmadi.

    ¶40

    3. Al-Sayyid Muhammad Al-Shawa. He and his entire family, which probably consisted of a wife and two children, were Ahmadi.

    ¶41

    4. Al-Sayyid Zakariyya Al-Shawwa. He was the younger brother of Al-Sayyid Muhammad Al-Shawwa, employed in the police.

    ¶42

    5. Al-Sayyid Ibrahim Al-Jabban. He was a school teacher.

    ¶43

    6. Al-Sayyid Yahya Naulaiti

    ¶44

    7. Al-Sayyid Abu Adil. He was a middle-aged, sincere Ahmadi.

    ¶45

    8. The offspring of Al-Sayyid Al-Husni Sahib's elder brother, the late Al-Sayyid Muhiy-ud-Din Al-Husni, which consisted of five boys (and perhaps daughters).

    ¶46

    9. Al-Sayyid Mahmud Rabbani and his brother Muhammad Rabbani. The father of these two young men was a very sincere Ahmadi who had passed away before my arrival in Damascus. The Nikah of Hazrat Chaudhry Muhammad Zafrullah Khan Sahib took place with Bushra Rabbani, a sister of these two brothers, the details of which are recorded in the following pages.

    ¶47

All of these were Syrian friends. Out of the Palestinian Ahmadis, the names of two are remembered. One was Muhammad Al-Qazaq Sahib who, along with his family, was residing in a portion of Zawiyat al-Hisni. The second was Al-Sayyid Rushdi Al-Basti Sahib who had been the Amir of the Palestinian Jamaat before migrating towards Syria.

    ¶48

According to my estimate, at that time, including children, the total number of Ahmadis, who were mostly residing in Damascus, was around 200 and 300.

    ¶49

In the very beginning, language was a very big problem for me, especially because all the people spoke the colloquial language, and although the colloquial language is a distorted form of the Arabic language itself, it is so different from the original language that unless one spends a considerable amount of time becoming acquainted with it, one understands nothing at all. Secondly, another difficulty was that despite studying Arabic for several years in school and then in Jamia, I did not have practice speaking Arabic, and although I could understand 90 percent of it when correct Arabic language (which is called Al-Arabiyyat-ul-Fus'ha) was spoken, nevertheless, in the very beginning it was difficult for me to converse in Arabic. Similarly, newspapers also have a specific language in which a very large portion consists of those words which are borrowed from foreign languages and molded into Arabic. However, as time passed, I also began to get practice in conversing in Arabic. Similarly, I became familiar with the frequently used words of the colloquial Arabic language. By reading Arabic newspapers, mastery over the journalistic language was also gradually achieved.

    ¶50

Soon after reaching Damascus, a major visa problem arose for me there. Only a day or two had passed when Al-Sayyid Al-Husni Sahib inquired whether I had come with a visa. I said no. Malik Mubarak Ahmad Sahib used to say that Al-Sayyid Al-Husni Sahib himself would make the arrangements. At this, he became very angry and said that he knew very well how difficult it is to obtain a visa after reaching here; then why did he give this wrong advice? And indeed, that difficulty clearly manifested before me as well. The fact was that according to the laws of that time in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, etc., there was no restriction on a Pakistani entering the country. Upon entering at the border, a travel visa (tourist visa) was stamped, which meant that within 24 or 48 hours, the next border should be crossed. However, to stay in the country, a regular visa was required, which, according to the rules, the embassy of the country issues. Now, converting a travel visa into a residence visa was difficult, if not impossible. Al-Sayyid Muneer Al-Hussaini Sahib was well aware of this difficulty. That is why he expressed considerable worry. Another reason for his worry, which became known later, was that the government was aware that he belonged to a Jamaat whose markaz was in Pakistan, and that he also preached his specific beliefs. Therefore, the government kept an eye on his movements. Consequently, Jamaati gatherings and meetings, etc., were conducted in such a manner that there would not be much noise and bustle. Jumu'ah prayer was also performed quickly, and friends would either leave for their homes or sit in the library hall for a short while. This was the reason that when, after two days, I asked him to accompany me for the extension of the visa, he said that if he went along, it would create difficulty in obtaining the visa, and it was possible that those people might refuse altogether. Therefore, it is better that you go alone and speak yourself, saying that I want to stay here for some time. Regarding the police station, etc., he explained to me how to reach there. In my going alone and speaking, the difficulty of language stood in the way. Firstly, I could not speak Arabic well yet. Secondly, understanding the colloquial language of those people was difficult for me anyway. And besides Arabic, if those people knew any language, it was French. They had hardly any familiarity with English. I do not remember how I spoke the first time. However, as a result of it, I obtained a visa for two weeks.
