This humble one was born in 1927 in (District Shahpur — presently Sargodha). This was also where this humble one's maternal grandparents' home was, who were farmers by profession. In contrast, my father, Master Imam Ali Sahib Hazoorpuri, then Bherowi, was a teacher in the Department of Education in the District Board Sargodha. As far as Ahmadiyyat is concerned, my father's eldest brother, Master Muhammad Zaman Sahib, buried in Bahishti Maqbara , was the first in our family to become Ahmadi, and although he had passed away in his youth, because of him there remained a discussion of Ahmadiyyat in the house. Thus, this humble one's younger Tayaa (paternal uncle), Munshi Muhammad Sultan Katib, became Ahmadi as a result of this very influence. His elder brother, Muhammad Ramzan Sahib, however, did not become Ahmadi until his last breath. My own father accepted Ahmadiyyat much later, that is, approximately in 1930/31. At that time this humble one's age was 3 to 4 years.

This humble one passed the primary examination from Lower Middle School Hazoorpur, situated 5 kilometres to the east of Bhera. It was here that this humble one's Abba Jaan, Mukarram Master Imam Ali Sahib, was the Headmaster of the school. In the fourth class, by participating in the district-level competitive examination, I obtained a scholarship. At that time, this scholarship was given at the rate of four rupees monthly for four years. For high school education, this humble one was admitted to Government High School Bhera. This six-year period of my education holds a special importance in this respect, that this humble one remained the monitor of his class from the fifth class right up to the tenth class.

After passing the Matriculation examination from Government High School Bhera in 1944, this humble one got admitted for further education in , Qadian, which opened in the same year, and obtained Roll Number One (One). In this respect, this humble one can say that this humble one is the first student of Talim-ul-Islam College.

During our stay in Qadian, our beloved pastime, besides pursuing education, was to attend Majlis-e-Irfan in Masjid Mubarak Qadian after the evening prayer. In those days, Hazrat Amir-ul-Momineen would come to Masjid Mubarak almost daily after Maghrib prayer. Special benches had been prepared for this purpose, which were placed in a semi-circular shape in front of the mihrab immediately after the prayer, and then, after took his seat upon them, a few select Sahaba would sit to Huzoor's right and left. This gathering, which continued until Isha prayer, did not have any particular fixed topic under discussion; rather, Huzoor would sometimes initiate a discussion on some scholarly matter, or it would be an answer to some question presented by those present.

This humble one's stay in Qadian was at the college hostel "Fazl-e-Umar Hostel", which for one year was established in a previously constructed "Guest House" located on Darul Anwar Road. Among the special memories of that time's hostel, one beautiful memory whose blessed effect is still established upon hearts, is an incident that fell to the lot of the hostel-residing students only once. Among the buildings located above Darul Anwar Road, the last building was the residence of Mukarram Principal Sahib, Hazrat Sahibzada Mian Nasir Ahmad Sahib. We saw several times that Hazrat Ummul Momineen, that is, Hazrat Syeda Nusrat Jahan Begum Sahiba, who had special love for Hazrat Sahibzada Mian Nasir Ahmad—indeed she considered him a substitute for her deceased son Mubarak Ahmad—was, in the company of some ladies, walking on foot along this road towards Hazrat Mian Nasir's residence. One day the hostel superintendent, Mukarram Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib, told the hostel students that now, on the day when Hazrat Ummul Momineen would be passing by, they would be informed. At that time all the students present in the hostel should stand in a line on one side of the road, and when Hazrat Ummul Momineen would begin to pass, all together should say Assalamo Alaikum to her. This occasion arose, and those fortunate students who were present in the hostel at that time took part in this blessed occasion. After one year, our hostel was shifted from there to a newly constructed building made of raw bricks near the college building located in Darul Uloom, and after that no occasion like this ever arose again.

Among the memories of Talim-ul-Islam College, Qadian, as an act of Tahdees-e-Ne'mat, this humble one wishes to mention one of my dreams, which is as follows: that when in 1946 the Intermediate University examinations began, then two days before the Physics paper was to begin, this humble one saw that

    ¶9

Find the velocity of light according to Fizeo's method? :

"I am in the examination room. There is a Physics paper, and the examiner is distributing the papers, but the papers have fallen short. At this, the examiner begins writing the questions on the blackboard so that the boys who did not receive the question paper could copy them down. The humble one () was also among those boys who had not received a paper. So I too began copying the questions. During this, my eyes opened. When I awoke from sleep, all the questions except one had vanished from my mind. And that question was this: Find the velocity of light according to Fizeo's method?

    ¶10

That is, how would you discover the speed of light by the method of Fizeau (a scientist who discovered the speed of light)?"

    ¶11

Now in our syllabus there were two methods of determining the speed of light: one was Fizeau's method, and the other was a method discovered by another scientist. Considering the first method difficult, I had left it aside and made complete preparation of the second method. When in a dream I saw the Fizeau method, I spent an entire day preparing it thoroughly. I also told one of my classmates that in my opinion this question was coming in the examination. Now when the day of the examination came and this humble one went into the examination room, I was astonished to see that the very first question in the paper was that

    ¶12

So I solved that question, and solved it correctly, and rendered thanks to Allah Ta'ala that He, through His special grace, granted guidance.

After passing the Intermediate examination, this humble one came to his homeland Bhera. There was no intention of further education when this humble one read in the newspaper the appeal published on behalf of Hazrat Al-Musleh Al-Mau'ood, may Allah be pleased with him, calling upon the youth to dedicate their lives. Thus, with the permission of my parents, this humble one sent an application containing my educational particulars to the service of Huzoor. A reply came immediately from Huzoor that I should reach Qadian at once. Accordingly, in April or May 1947, this humble one reached Qadian and reported my presence. It is not remembered who took this humble one's interview, but the decision that was made was that this humble one had been taken for the Fazl-e-Umar Research Institute being established in Qadian. The head of this Research Institute, Mukarram Doctor Abdul Ahad Sahib, Ph.D., had known this humble one since college days because he had taught us Chemistry for some time during the F.Sc. classes. Then, according to his advice, it was decided regarding this humble one that I should first do M.Sc. in Chemistry. Since our Talim-ul-Islam College had by then been approved for degree classes, this humble one stayed on in Qadian itself, waiting for the B.Sc. class to begin.

    ¶14

This was the year in which the issue of the independence of the subcontinent had reached its peak, and here and there sporadic Hindu-Muslim disturbances had also begun. However, no one, even in their wildest imagination, had conceived of the situation that eventually resulted from these. During my stay in Qadian, a delegation consisting of three persons was sent by Fazl-e-Umar Research Institute to Kashmir for the purpose of surveying certain coal mines there, so that if they proved useful, they could be purchased and research conducted on them. This humble one was also sent along as a member of this delegation. During the return from Kashmir, when our vehicle was coming from Batala to Qadian, upon the vehicle's arrival at Wadala Granthian, Sikhs injured the vehicle's driver and a few other passengers, whereupon the vehicle stopped there, and all the passengers, the majority of whom were Ahmadi men and women going to Qadian, were told to get off the vehicle. It was nighttime. Thus, news of this incident was immediately sent to Qadian, from where, arrangements having been made, we reached Qadian. This was the first incident after which conditions in Punjab began to continuously deteriorate. On 14 August 1947, Pakistan also came into existence as a new state, but despite this, it was not in the thought of any Ahmadi to migrate from Qadian to some other place, or to go to Pakistan and search for some new centre.

    ¶15

However, conditions were continuously deteriorating. Soon the arrival of trains was cut off. Secondly, in Qadian the coming and going of post also stopped. Then soon the sole means by which Qadian was connected to the outside world, that is, the telegraph system, that too was cut off. In such circumstances, on the advice and insistence of the individuals appointed for security of the Jamaat, Huzoor went to Lahore so that he could talk to the Government of India regarding the security of Qadian, because Huzoor was firmly convinced that if the Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, were informed of the real conditions of Qadian, he would certainly do something. Thus on 31 August 1947, Huzoor departed from Qadian and reached Lahore. On the other hand, in the surroundings of Qadian, rivers of Muslim blood were being made to flow, and in order to save their lives, they were heading towards Qadian, which had so far remained safe from this situation.

    ¶16

This situation was continuing when one day it was heard that the army had arrived. As for what consolations these people gave to the members of the Jamaat upon reaching Qadian, the humble one has no knowledge, but it was soon felt that this army had not come for our protection but for the protection of the non-Muslim gangs. All this situation was being witnessed by the humble one with his own eyes while residing in Qadian. One day—and that was the day of 3 October 1947—men of the police and army, bringing Sikh goondas with them, entered from different directions into Mohalla Dar-ur-Rahmat of Qadian and began firing bullets indiscriminately, and started saying: vacate the houses, otherwise these people who are armed with swords and spears will kill you. The result of this was that the Ahmadis left their houses open just as they were and began gathering in the building of the High School and its boarding house, and in no time the mohalla became empty. At that time the humble one had already come to the College hostel located near the College building, with the thought that the College was now soon going to open.

    ¶17

As it became known shortly afterward, this action by the police and the army was not confined only to Darul Rahmat, but the same action had also taken place in other localities as well. Even the old settlement of the city itself, where the Jamaat's office etc. were located, and where Masjid Mubarak was situated, had, as a result of this same action, become empty, and all those Ahmadi friends had gathered inside Khana-e-Maseeh Maud and in the nearby offices.

    ¶18

From that day, Qadian became such a refuge for the people of Qadian where the demands of normal life were completely transformed. While living in the Boarding House, the humble one observed that its two-storey building, which usually served to house one hundred, one hundred and fifty students, had now become filled with ten twelve thousand, rather even more, men, women and children. A similar condition prevailed in the nearby school building. It is not possible for the humble one to fully capture in writing how our people were living there in such large numbers. Moreover, this state of affairs was not for one or two days but continued for a full three weeks. The biggest problem was that of food items, which had already become scarce. And now even if someone had something, it had been left behind at home, and all these people had arrived here empty-handed, having brought only their lives. Only the stocks of wheat, which are gathered several months in advance for the , were present. The flour-grinding machines had already been shut down beforehand. Thus I remember that everyone, that is, children, the elderly, women and men, were forced to eat only boiled wheat. Perhaps a week or ten days had passed on this when our beloved master sent from Lahore heaps upon heaps of flour, sugar, ghee, and I do not know what else, for us. On the other side, he sent nearly one hundred trucks constituting a very large convoy to carry away the women and children. The order was that only women and children should be sent on these, and from among the men, only those whom the administration of Qadian deemed necessary to send.

    ¶19

Thus after the departure of the women and children, some ease was created in the accommodation of the men in the boarding house, but after a few days we were ordered to leave this place and go to the central population of the city because the government was asking us to vacate the boarding house. So this humble one, along with the other residents, came to a house near Darul Masih.

In view of this new and unexpectedly arising situation, the thought that improvement in circumstances could be brought about through negotiation with the government now became an impossible-to-attain hope. The government's intentions had become completely clear, namely that it was not prepared, under any circumstances, to allow any Ahmadi to remain in Qadian. In view of these precarious circumstances, that the Government of India was not prepared to render us any assistance, Huzoor, while residing in Lahore, began meeting with the local government officers there and, at intervals, began sending military convoys consisting of four, five, six or more trucks. Under this arrangement, the turn of this humble one (khaksar) came on 11 November 1947. Thus on that day our convoy, consisting of four trucks, set out from Qadian and reached Lahore on the same day. Later it became known that this was the second-to-last convoy to leave Qadian. The last convoy left Qadian on 16 November, after which only those Ahmadis remained in Qadian for whom formal permission had already been obtained from the Government of India, that they would remain there for the protection of their sacred places.

The central institutions of Qadian had already bid farewell to Qadian and come to Lahore. Now it was decided that Taleem-ul-Islam College should also be shifted to Pakistan. While the search for a location for the college was still going on, Huzur instructed the college's Principal Sahib, namely Hazrat Sahibzada Mian Nasir Ahmad, that wherever a place was found in Lahore, the college should be started there. Accordingly, a dilapidated building in Canal Park, Lahore, was obtained from the Rehabilitation Department, and classes of Taleem-ul-Islam College were started in it. This humble one also arrived there and, in accordance with the earlier decision made regarding myself, took admission in it and began to receive education. A few months later, our college shifted to the vacated building of D.A.V. College within the city of Lahore.

In 1950, the humble one took the B.A., B.Sc. examination from this very college. The humble one wishes to mention here, as tahdees-e-ne'mat, a dream of his own connected with this period of college life as well. And that is this, that after taking the examination, before coming to my home in Bhera, the humble one was staying in Lahore itself for a few days, when the humble one saw in a ru'ya that

    ¶23

"I am in my house in Bhera (situated in Mohalla Haji Gulab). What do I see but that some boy who seems to be an acquaintance of mine has brought an English newspaper and says to me, the result of B.Sc. has been published in this newspaper, go and see your result. At this I take the newspaper in my hand and begin to look at the results. The results were given in the order of the university roll numbers. I search for my roll number (which I still remember, it was 1294) and look at the number written opposite it (the pass marks), and they were 334. That is to say, I had passed by obtaining this many marks.

    ¶24

Now the numbers shown in the vision were so clear that I could not even imagine that in reality they would be exactly the same. With this thought in mind, I did not tell this vision of mine to anyone. Then I came to my home in Bhera and began waiting for the result. What God did was this: one day when I was at home, a classmate of mine from my school days, Mahboob-ul-Ilahi Paracha, came over. I had never met him again since finishing school, but he knew that I had also taken the B.Sc. examination that year. In his hand was an English newspaper, and he said to me, "In this the University's B.A., B.Sc. result has been published; my name is not in it, you check your result." So I took the newspaper in hand and began searching for my roll number. What do I see but that, exactly as had been shown in the vision, in front of my roll number (1294) written within brackets, precisely the same numbers were written that had been shown to me in the dream about a month earlier. Thus, by the grace of Allah Ta'ala, I had passed. I immediately began offering nawafil of thanksgiving. My respected mother had gone out somewhere. When she returned, she asked, "Which prayer is Fazl-ul-Ilahi offering?" At this, this humble one's elder sister, Iqbal Begum Sahiba, marhooma, told her that he is offering nawafil of thanksgiving in the joy of having passed the examination.

Rabwah Darul Hijrat My educational period at Jamia Ahmadiyya Rabwah

During this period, the population of had begun and all the central offices which, since Partition, had been located in Lahore, had been transferred to Rabwah. Thus, when this humble one, after the result of my B.Sc. was declared, reached Rabwah in 1950 and submitted, at the Tehrik-e-Jadid office, the report of my success in B.Sc., this report was sent for the attention of Hazrat al-Musleh al-Maud. Huzoor wrote upon it: "Let him be admitted into the Jamiah." With this one single sentence alone, this humble one's entire future became bound up. Thus, this humble one, going back to Bhera, returned once again to Rabwah for the completion of my next phase of education.

In 1956, when this humble one finished his education at Jamia, he was informed that his posting had been made to Ghana (a country in West Africa), and therefore he should prepare to go to Ghana. During the course of his education at Jamia itself, this humble one's marriage had taken place, and Allah Ta'ala had also blessed him with a daughter, whose name was kept as Hafsa, based on the name proposed by Hazrat Musleh Maud(rta). In any case, I was told to prepare for the journey as soon as possible. During this time, the Tabsheer Office also gave me some additional funds in connection with the preparation for the journey. It was also stated that before going to Ghana, this humble one would have to stay in Damascus for a period of 6 months so that I could gain proficiency there in the Arabic language.

    ¶29

Before this humble one's departure for Damascus, a farewell party was arranged in his honour by the Jamia, in which Hazrat Al-Musleh Al-Maud (may Allah be pleased with him) also participated. This party was held on the bank of the Chenab River. This programme had been decided upon much earlier, in which the then Principal of the Jamia, Janab Maulana Abul Ata Sahib Jalandhari (marhoom), submitted before Hazrat Khalifatul Masih the Second (may Allah be pleased with him) that this person (pointing towards this humble one) is soon to depart for Damascus, may Huzoor pray for him. Upon this, what Huzoor said, this humble one relates in his own words with brevity. He said:

    ¶30

"You are going there to learn the language. Firstly, do not meet with your own people there (meaning those who speak Urdu or Punjabi), rather keep company as much as possible with Arabs, otherwise even if you stay for years and years, you will not learn the language. Secondly, instead of large literary books, read light-type literature, that is, story-books (qasas). A literary book tires the mind quickly, whereas the interest in a book in the style of a story remains sustained, and a person does not get tired while reading it. Thirdly, read such books not just once but again and again. The first time, a person reads a book for his own interest, but it is necessary to read it a second, third, and fourth time for the sake of the language. In this way, you will become informed of the idioms of the language. Speaking about himself, he said that I read one English novel eighteen times."

    ¶31

These precious advices of Hazrat's proved very helpful for this humble one in learning the Arabic language and later the German language.

    ¶32

This humble one's departure from Rabwah took place on some date in the month of February 1956. While the thought of this separation, which was to last for many years, was a test of patience for this humble one's parents, above all it was that lady who showed the example of patience, contentment, and steadfastness—she who had the greatest physical and spiritual bond with me—namely, this humble one's life companion, Ayesha Siddiqa, whose sole support in life, after the Being of Allah Ta'ala, was this humble one alone. But this handmaiden of Allah never once said, "What will become of me now." Rather, what she said, in word and in the language of her state, was an echo of the words of that righteous lady (Hazrat Hajira, peace be upon her) who, upon hearing from her venerable husband that he was leaving her and the fruit of his heart in a barren, waterless valley purely for Allah's sake, had said, "Then Allah too will never let us go to waste." Our daughter Hafsa was at that time only four years old. The responsibility of raising and caring for this child, who was receiving an equal share of her parents' tender care, was now to fall entirely upon her mother. Neither my parents nor any of my brothers or sisters resided in Rabwah at that time, that there might be hope of their support, nor did their circumstances permit them to come to Rabwah. As for my in-laws, there was not a single person among them who could stand by us in these circumstances of ours. For, firstly, whatever their condition, they lived in a remote village. Moreover, they were illiterate, afflicted by misfortune, homeless, and without support. And besides, when all was said and done, there were only two persons among them, namely my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law, who was, in addition, the mother of six small children and was occupied from head to foot with her own domestic responsibilities. Her brother had never existed from the start. However, my mother-in-law was a person to whom, in seeking material support, both our eyes turned. So a letter was written to her. She was living with my sister-in-law, that is, her younger daughter, in a remote village. Upon receiving the letter, she reached Rabwah at once. When she was told that I was going on a long journey from which it would be difficult for me to return before four or five years, she was struck dumb with shock. This lady, a village dweller, illiterate, of middle age, and unfamiliar with the ups and downs of the times, could only understand this much—that her son-in-law was going to take up employment in some far-off country. Meanwhile, this humble one departed from Rabwah on the appointed day and, passing through Karachi, Basra, and Baghdad, reached Damascus.

    ¶33

After this humble one (Khaksar) left Rabwah, what became of Ayesha Siddiqa's condition, a picture of it to some extent she drew in that letter which she wrote to me some days after reaching Damascus, or which she told me after four years when this Khaksar returned. It was approximately this:

    ¶34

"After you boarded the vehicle, my condition became such that it was as if there was no life left in me. With great difficulty I reached home. Before evening, all the relatives departed for their respective homes. The next day, Phuphi Ji (the mother of the humble one/Khaksar) also went to Bhera. Now there was mother, there was I, and Hafsa. Mother had cooked food. I had no appetite at all, and went to sleep just as I was. Hafsa clung to me the whole day. However, at some moments she would ask, "When will Ammi and Abbu come?" If I had an answer for this, I would have given it. Instead of answering the question, a few tears would drop from my eyes."

    ¶35

Upon reaching Damascus, the humble one took up residence with the of the Damascus Jamaat, Mukarram Al-Sayyid Munir al-Hisni, at Zawiyat al-Hisni. Since the humble one's programme was to stay in Damascus for 6 to 7 months, Mukarram Al-Sayyid Munir al-Hisni Sahib inquired whether I had brought a visa for Syria, that is, the country of Sham. Upon the humble one saying that I had not brought that with me, Mukarram al-Hisni Sahib became somewhat worried. Before going to Rabwah, there had indeed been a discussion with -e-Tabshir regarding this, but Mukarram Malik Mubarak Ahmad Sahib (who later became a professor at ), who had previously lived in Damascus for a long period, had said, "There is no need; Al-Sayyid Munir al-Hisni Sahib will take care of everything there."

    ¶36

Zawiyat al-Hisni, which was the personal property of the family of Al-Syed Munir al-Hisni Sahib, consisted of a very large hall and a few small rooms above and below. One of these rooms was being used as a mosque. Another room was used by Al-Syed al-Hisni Sahib as a kitchen. A small room, which also had a small courtyard attached to it, became my kitchen. This same room had also been used as a kitchen before me by Mukarram Malik Mubarak Ahmad Sahib. In the remaining rooms lived a few Ahmadi families who had come from Palestine. Since no room was vacant for my residence, the hall of Zawiyat al-Hisni, which was actually a very large library, began to be used for my sitting, gathering, and sleeping. During the daytime, this same hall was used as a meeting place. The Jamaat's small and large meetings were also held in this same hall. Likewise, this same hall was also used for the five daily prayers. At that time there was a fairly sizeable Jamaat in Damascus, which consisted almost entirely of well-educated people. One part of them consisted of those Ahmadis who had come from Palestine and settled as refugees. All the rest were Syrian Arab Ahmadis.

    ¶37

In the very beginning, language was a very big problem for me. Especially because all the people spoke the colloquial language, and although the colloquial language (Colloquial) is a corrupted form of the Arabic language, it differs so much from the original language that unless one stays for a good long period and becomes acquainted with it, one cannot make sense of what the speaker is saying. Secondly, this humble one did not yet have practice in speaking the Arabic language either. If someone spoke correct Arabic (which is called al-Arabiyyah al-Fusha), 90 percent of it I would understand. Similarly, newspapers also have a particular language of their own. A very large portion of Arabic newspapers consisted of those words which had been borrowed from foreign languages and cast into Arabic form. However, gradually practice in speaking also began, and understanding of the language of newspapers also began to develop. Likewise, acquaintance with the frequently used words of the colloquial language also began to develop. Meanwhile, in accordance with the instructions given by Hazrat al-Musleh al-Maud, I began going repeatedly to the libraries of Damascus and bringing back all sorts of small and large books to read.

    ¶38

However, as far as the visa problem was concerned, Mukarram Al-Sayyid Munir Al-Husni Sahib became quite worried about it. The matter was this: according to the laws of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, etc. at that time, there was no restriction for a Pakistani entering the country. A travel visa (Transit) for entering at the border was issued without any obstruction, which meant that within 24 or 48 hours the next border had to be crossed. However, to stay in the country a proper visa was required, which, according to the rules, the country's embassy would issue, and converting a transit visa into a residence visa, if not impossible, was certainly difficult. Al-Sayyid Munir Al-Husni Sahib was well aware of this difficulty. That is why he expressed considerable anxiety. Another reason for his anxiety, which became known soon afterward, was also this: that the government was aware that he belonged to a Jamaat whose center was in Pakistan, and that he also preached his particular beliefs. For this reason the government kept an eye on his movements. Thus, Jamaat gatherings and meetings were held in such a manner that there would not be too much noise and commotion. Friday prayers too were performed quickly, after which the friends would go off to their respective homes, or would sit for a little while in the library hall. This was the reason that when this humble one asked him to accompany me for the extension of the visa, he said that if he went along, difficulty would arise in obtaining the visa, and it was possible that they would refuse outright. Therefore it was better that I go alone and speak myself, saying that I wished to stay here for some time. Regarding the police station, etc., he explained to me how to get there.

    ¶39

So I went alone to the police station. But since I did not have a good command of the Arabic language, I could not speak Arabic fluently. Secondly, those people spoke and understood colloquial Arabic instead of eloquent Arabic, which was completely foreign to me. Apart from Arabic, if those people knew any other language, it was the French language. They had hardly any familiarity with English. I do not remember how I spoke the first time. However, as a result of it, I got a visa for two weeks. Now these two weeks passed by in the blink of an eye. When I went to the office the second time, I found out about a police officer there who knew some English. Through him, when I explained my purpose for staying, I got a further two weeks' visa. But along with it, I was told that there would be no further extension in this.

    ¶40

Despite these difficulties with the visa, my reading of Arabic books continued regularly. However, the worry about the visa remained hovering over my heart and mind at all times. Now what God did was this: one day when I was sleeping at night in the library hall of Zawiyat-ul-Hisni, the following sentence was uttered on my tongue with great force and clarity:

    ¶41

"You read the books and leave the rest of the matter to me"

    ¶42

With that, my eyes opened. I was still feeling the sweetness and delight of these words within myself. My heart desired that those words should flow upon my tongue again. This flowing of these words upon my tongue in this manner was my first spiritual experience, through which that state of revelation, as Hazrat Masih Maud (peace be upon him) has described in his books, became clearly manifest before me — that it is a most delightful and sweet discourse which flows upon a person's tongue while he is in the state of sleep. Falhamdulillah 'ala zalik. Now, when I had recovered a little and began to reflect upon what words these were that had flowed upon my tongue, I realized that this was a consolation given from his God to me, this insignificant and faulty one, that I should continue my work for which I had come — namely, reading books — and leave the matter of the visa to Allah Ta'ala.

    ¶43

Now I began to wait to see when and in what form this divine glad-tiding would be fulfilled. So it was that barely two days had passed after this vision when, in connection with the matter of obtaining my visa, Mukarram As-Sayyid Al-Hasani Sahib said that under normal circumstances an extension of the visa was difficult, but one possibility was that we could try through the Pakistani embassy in Damascus, as perhaps they might be able to help in this matter. So he arranged over the telephone an appointment to meet with the Pakistani ambassador residing in Damascus, Janab Lal Shah Bukhari Sahib. Janab Lal Shah Bukhari Sahib, as Mukarram As-Sayyid Munir Al-Hasani Sahib told me, was among the admirers of Mukarram Chaudhry Muhammad Zafarullah Sahib(RA), and had for a long period been serving as Pakistan's ambassador in Syria. As-Sayyid Al-Hasani Sahib had on several occasions previously met with him in the company of the aforementioned Mukarram Chaudhry Sahib. I, however, had not yet had the occasion to meet him.

    ¶44

On meeting the aforementioned Ambassador, Mr. Lal Shah Bukhari Sahib, he did write a letter on behalf of the Embassy, as a result of which I received a further one-month visa. But he said that if I were to take up employment at the Embassy, in that case I could get a one-year visa, but for that I would have to come to the Embassy regularly, even if only for half a day. That is, the employment could be for full time or for half time. In the first case, the full salary (whatever was fixed for an employee of that grade) would be given, and in the second case, half the salary would be given.

    ¶45

This proposal was very much liked by Al-Sayyid Al-Husni Sahib. However, I felt some uneasiness about it. That is, a (life-devotee) taking employment in an embassy. On the other hand, it was also apparent that the embassy could not do more than this. So I wrote all of this to Wakalat-e-Tabshir, and along with it also sent a telegram containing the same subject matter to the sacred service of Sayyidina Hazrat Khalifatul Masih the Second (may Allah be pleased with him).

    ¶46

Now as for Tabshir, I do not remember whether any reply came from that side or not, but within one month a reply came from Hazrat al-Musleh al-Maud (may Allah be pleased with him) that if a visa could be obtained in this manner, I should take up the employment. Accordingly, I took up half-time employment at the embassy because I thought that if it were full-time employment, I would have to remain at the embassy the entire day, and in this way my actual work would suffer harm. Now I immediately got a visa for one year. So I would reach the embassy on time in the morning and work there until noon. Perhaps it was arranging newspapers in order, or some similar kind of work that was assigned to me, and I would spend the remaining time wandering through libraries reading books. In this way, where Allah Ta'ala solved the problem of my visa, there also arose for me a means of income. What happened to me was just as they say in the Punjabi language, "naale hajj te naale wanj." "Wanj" means trade, commerce. The meaning was that the work got done, and along with it, financial benefit was also obtained.

    ¶47

A month after arriving in Damascus, this humble one received the joyous news from Rabwah that, by the grace of Allah Ta'ala, another member had been added to our household. That is to say, this humble one's wife had given birth to a child whose name, in accordance with the name already suggested by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ibrahim Sahib Baqapuri, was kept as Zakariya Ismail. Mukarram Al-Sayyid Munir-ul-Hisni Sahib and other Syrian friends, upon hearing this, had specially congratulated this humble one.

    ¶48

My appointed period of six months' stay in Damascus had just about come to an end when that dangerous war broke out between Israel and Egypt, in which two great countries, namely France and England, took part wholeheartedly. This tripartite attack, which was carried out at Israel's instigation with the aim of forever wresting the Suez Canal away from Egypt, was the first organized attack resulting from the friction between the Arabs and Israel, in which, through the intervention of the Soviet Union, all three attacking powers were ultimately badly repulsed. Since as a result of this war a threat of attack had also arisen against Syria, a state of emergency was declared throughout the country. Sirens began sounding day and night, meaning that one should hide in safe places or extinguish all kinds of lights. Besides other internal security measures, all flights coming into or going out of Damascus and Beirut were also suspended. Thus my departure from Damascus for Ghana (at that time still called the Gold Coast) was postponed for an indefinite period. Finally, on some date in November, it was announced that the air route had opened. So, on the advice of Mukarram Al-Sayyid Munir-ul-Hasni Sahib, my seat was booked on the first flight going to Ghana. And thus, having taken leave of the Jamaat of Damascus, according to the program I first reached Beirut by car. Mukarram Al-Sayyid Munir-ul-Hasni Sahib came with me as far as Beirut, where, after spending one night, this humble one, on a French airline's plane, reached Accra, the capital of Ghana, via Benghazi (Tunis). Then, after staying one day at the mission house in Accra, this humble one reached Saltpond the next day by bus. Saltpond is a small town situated on the seacoast about one hundred fifty miles away from Accra, which was at that time the central mission of the Jamaat.

At that time the in-charge of the Ghana Mission was Mukarram Maulana Nazir Ahmad Sahib Mubashir, who was living in the Mission House with his wife and two children, Nazir Ahmad and Munir Ahmad. He was very surprised at my sudden arrival. He had already received information from the that some missionary of such-and-such name would be coming for the Swedro Arabic School, but he had no information about the month or the date. Giving that information was indeed my responsibility, but for some reason I had not been able to inform him. In any case, he was pleased that a long-standing demand of his, made to the Markaz with great insistence, had been fulfilled. When I asked the reason for this insistence, what he told me, in summary, was this: some members of the Jamaat of Swedro had been after him for some time that an Arabic school should be opened in Swedro so that their children could study Arabic. He kept telling them what they would do by only learning Arabic, but they were not willing to listen to anything he said. These were a few people who had gotten the whole Jamaat to follow them. Their insistence reached such intensity that he wrote to the Markaz that if this school for which they were demanding was not opened — for which their demand was that some Arabic-teaching teacher be sent for from the Markaz — there was a danger that they would separate from the Jamaat altogether. When I inquired further, he told me that for the school they had also given land, where a building was being constructed at the expense of the Markaz. They had also gathered together some students. For the time being, the school was being held in the mosque itself. And teachers of the local Jamaat kept teaching them there. He told me the name of one of them as Jibril Sa'id and the name of the other as Abdu (full name Abdullah). About this second one he said that he was someone who had studied at some Arabic madrasa there, and that apart from some broken Arabic he knew nothing else. However, Jibril Sa'id knew English in addition to Arabic. And that he (Jibril Sa'id) was our local missionary, who had now been placed in the so-called Arabic school. After this initial conversation about the school, Maulana Mubashir Sahib asked me about food, and I told him that for three days I had not eaten anything worthwhile. So he served home-cooked food.
