That same year, upon the opening of in Dar-ul-Aman, this humble one reached Qadian and took admission in First Year. The roll numbers allotted to the students of this first class of the College were according to the marks obtained in the university examination, and since this humble one had the highest marks among the students admitted to the College up to that time, this humble one received Roll Number One. In this respect, this humble one can say that this humble one is the very first student of Talim-ul-Islam College. Wa la fakhr! (This is not said out of pride!)

In 1946, after completing Intermediate in Science, this humble one came to his homeland Bhera, and since in view of the financial condition of the parents he could not continue his education further, he contented himself with this brief education and began searching for employment. During this time, a Khutbah of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih the Second (may Allah be pleased with him) came to be heard, in which had laid special emphasis on . In fact, he had said words to this effect, that at this time the Jamaat is in need of many Waqifeen, and those parents who do not present their children for Waqf are answerable before God. This humble one, having come home, consulted his mother in this regard. Walida Sahiba, with great openness of heart, granted me permission to devote my life. Thereupon this humble one immediately wrote a letter to Qadian and, describing his educational qualifications, presented himself for Waqf in accordance with this appeal of Huzoor(rta). After a few days, a letter came, presumably from the Secretary Tehrik-e-Jadid, saying that your Waqf is approved and that you should reach Qadian at once and report.

This was that year, that is 1947, in which India got independence and as a result of it Pakistan came into being. The humble one () reached Qadian approximately in April or May. Tehrik-e-Jadid, with the approval of Hazrat Musleh Maud (may Allah be pleased with him), decided regarding the humble one that after completing M.Sc. he would be taken into Fazl-e-Umar Research Institute. The first stage was to pass B.Sc. But admissions in college had not yet begun when that painful phase of population transfer began, as a result of which the Ahmadis had to leave their sacred center and migrate towards Pakistan. The first temporary center was Lahore. Since no suitable building could be found for Talim-ul-Islam College, classes were started for the first few months in an abandoned building located in Canal Park, Lahore. Later, the college got the abandoned building of D.A.V. College located in the middle of Lahore. Meanwhile, in District Jhang, on the other side of the River Chenab, a vast area was purchased and the foundation of a permanent center of the Jamaat named "Rabwah" was laid there. Thus within two years the center of the Jamaat shifted to this new location. However, Talim-ul-Islam College remained in Lahore for some more time. The humble one did B.Sc. from here itself. When the results came out and the humble one reached to report, I received instruction from Huzoor to be admitted into Jamiatul Mubashireen. This is that institution of the Jamaat in which missionaries (muballigheen) of the are trained. As for the reason for the change of my line, the humble one has no knowledge about it.

In 1956, along with passing the final examination of Jamia, my practical life began. That is, I received instructions from -e-Tabshir that I had been appointed as Principal of an Ahmadiyya Arabic School in Swedru, in the West African country of Gold Coast (present name "Ghana"). However, before going to Ghana, I was instructed to stay for some time in Damascus (the country of Syria) to gain proficiency in the Arabic language. So, on some date in February 1956, I left my wife and four-year-old daughter, Hafsa, in Rabwah and first reached Karachi. Then from there, by sea vessel, I reached Basra, and then, passing through Baghdad, I reached Damascus.

In Damascus there is a small but active Jamaat consisting of Arab Ahmadis. Their , Al-Sayyid Munir al-Hisni Sahib, was very pleased to see me. This humble one had seen him before, when he had come and stayed in Qadian for some time before Partition, and this humble one was at that time studying in Talim-ul-Islam College. He had already received information about me from the . Accordingly, he introduced me to the friends of the Jamaat and explained the purpose of my coming. My residence was arranged in his own ancestral houses, "Zawiyat al-Hisni," in Shaghur. Al-Sayyid Munir al-Hisni Sahib himself also lived in a part of Zawiyat al-Hisni.

    ¶10

As soon as I reached Damascus, al-Sayyid al-Hisni Sahib inquired whether I had brought a visa with me or not. When I told him that I had been informed that there was no need to take a visa from there, that al-Sayyid al-Hisni Sahib himself would arrange it there, he became very displeased and said that obtaining a residency visa from there could present difficulties, and it was possible that the government might refuse. The matter was that, according to the laws of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon etc. at that time, there was no restriction on a Pakistani entering the country. At the border, a tourist visa for entry was stamped, which meant that the person entering the country had to cross the next border within the following 24 or 48 hours. However, to stay in the country, a proper visa was required, which the country's embassy issued according to the rules. Now, converting a tourist visa into a residency visa, if not impossible, was certainly difficult. And indeed, this difficulty now appeared before me in concrete form. So when, two days later, I went to the immigration office there to extend my visa, they gave me a visa for only two weeks. Now these two weeks passed by in the blink of an eye, and then the same difficulty appeared again. This time I got a further visa for two weeks. But along with it, I was told that there would be no further extension of it now.

It is worth mentioning that before departure from Rabwah, this humble one had an official meeting with Hazrat Musleh Maud(rz), in which the office man informed Huzoor(rz) that I was being sent to Damascus for a few months first, for the purpose of gaining proficiency in the Arabic language. On the subject of learning the language, among the various pieces of advice Huzoor(rz) gave, one was that upon going there I should read extensively from books of tales and stories. Thus, despite the difficulties of the visa, my effort to acquire scholarly command over the Arabic language continued. I found, among the collection of books present in Zawiyat al-Husni, some such small books which were in the style of tales and stories. I read all of them one by one. Besides this, I also went to the city library and brought from there small books of tales and stories and began reading them. Similarly, I also acquired membership of the American Library of Damascus. In this way I gained access to many books in the style of novels and short stories. Along with books, I also began studying Arabic newspapers. In the matter of studying books and newspapers, I always kept in view the method taught by Hazrat al-(rz), and benefited greatly from it.

    ¶12

In those very days, when I was sleeping one night in the library hall of Zawiyat-ul-Husni, the following sentence flowed upon my tongue with great force and clarity:

    ¶13

"You read books and leave the rest of the matter to me"

    ¶14

With this my eyes opened. I was still feeling within myself the sweetness and delight of these words. My heart desired that these words should again flow upon my tongue. This flowing of these words upon my tongue in this manner was my first spiritual experience through which that state of Ilham, as Hazrat Masih Mau'ood, peace be upon him, has described in his books, became clearly apparent to me—that it is a most delicious and sweet speech which flows upon the tongue of a sleeping person. Falhamdulillah 'ala zalik (So all praise be to Allah for that). Now when I settled down a little and began to reflect upon what words these were that had flowed upon my tongue, I felt that this humble and faulty one had been given consolation from his God that I should continue my work for which I had come, that is, reading books, and leave the matter of the visa to Allah Ta'ala. Now I began to wait to see how and in what manner this divine glad-tiding would be fulfilled.

    ¶15

Meanwhile, the two-week visa was again about to expire. Suddenly a suggestion came to the mind of Mukarram Al-Sayyid Al-Hasani Sahib that an attempt should be made to obtain my visa through the Pakistani embassy in Damascus. So he took an appointment on the phone and took me to the Ambassador of Pakistan, Mr. Lal Shah Bukhari Sahib. Al-Sayyid Lal Shah Bukhari was among the admirers of Mukarram Chaudhry Muhammad Zafarullah Khan Sahib(ra) and had been serving as Pakistan's ambassador in Syria for a long time. Al-Sayyid Al-Hasani Sahib had already met him several times before in the company of the aforementioned Mukarram Chaudhry Sahib. The details of the meeting with the said Ambassador have faded from my memory; however, as a result of this meeting I received a further one-month visa. It is possible that the embassy wrote some recommendation note or letter, or said something over the phone. I do not remember anything about this. For the future, they advised that if I were to take up employment at the embassy, my visa problem would be resolved. However, in that case, I would in any event have to work at the embassy, even if only for half a day. That is to say, the employment could be either full-time or half-time. And along with this, I would also receive a salary.

    ¶16

This proposal was very much liked by Al-Sayyid Al-Hisni Sahib. But I felt some hesitation about it. That is, a Waqf-e-Zindagi and employment at an embassy? On the other hand, it was also apparent that the embassy could not do more than this. So I wrote all this to Wakalat-e-Tabshir, Rabwah. And along with it, I sent a letter to the sacred service of Hazrat Aqdas wa Al-Musleh Maud (may Allah be pleased with him).

    ¶17

I do not remember whether a reply came from Tabshir or not, but within one month a reply was received from Hazrat Al-Musleh Al-Maud Huzur (رضی اللہ عنہ) had said that if permission could be obtained to live in this manner, then I should do so. In other words, permission for employment at the embassy was granted from Huzur Aqdas. Thus, with the completion of the employment process, the problem of the visa was resolved. Now I would go to the embassy for half the day to work, and spend the rest of the time in the study of books and newspapers. The visa was granted, I believe, for one year.

    ¶18

Here I would also like to mention my wife and daughter, whom I had left behind, relying solely on Allah, in a place that was in every sense a wilderness. Mohallah Darul Barakat, where I resided, had not yet become fully populated. Only a few houses had been built. The rest of the whole mohallah lay deserted. As my wife told me afterwards, after seeing me off on the Chenab Express bound for Karachi, in the company of friends of the Jamaat, when she came home alone, she came in and lay down without saying anything. The little girl too was puzzled as to what had happened. She had no idea at all that Abba would not be coming back for three or four years. She who used to run alongside me whenever I went to Jamia, seeing her mother silent, became frightened. When evening came, she said to her mother, "Ami, let us go to the station and bring Abba back." She thought that Abba had gone to Lyallpur or Sargodha and would return in the evening. Anyway, soon Allah Ta'ala created a source of joy for both mother and daughter. This was that only a month had passed since my departure when my son Zakariya was born. When the news of my son's birth reached me in Damascus, Al-Sayyid Al-Hasani Sahib and other Arab friends began offering congratulations.

When, after spending four years in Ghana, this humble one reached home again, my daughter Hafsa had become eight years old and my son Zakariya had become four years old. During my absence, my Abba Jan, Master Imam Ali Sahib, who after retiring from the education department had now come to settle in Rabwah, used to come to the house and console my wife. He would say, "Sadiqa! Now only two years remain until Fazl-e-Ilahi's return, now only one year remains." At that time, according to the general rule, a missionary who went without wife and children was called back after three or at most four years. My child Zakariya had become very attached to his Dada Jan. Thus my wife relates that when Abba Jan would come to our house, Zakariya would specially bring a stool for him. Abba Jan would also look at him with very loving eyes and then, to amuse him, would say, "Zakariya! When your Abba comes, you will forget me." Because of this, the feeling settled very intensely in my child Zakariya's heart that Abba must be something very dear indeed, since with his coming I would forget my Dada Jan, who loves me so much. I myself observed the practical expression of this feeling after my return, and it was in this way: that my child, with my very arrival, became extraordinarily attached and familiar with me. And although he has still not forgotten his Dada Jan even now, when more than forty years have passed since his passing away, his attachment to me has likewise continued in the same way. Now that he has gotten married and has become the father of four children, there has been no difference in his love for me. May Allah the Exalted keep him happy and content in his home, with health and safety.

On my return to the Markaz, I was appointed as Ustadh-ul-Jamia at the very institution from which, after completing my course as a Muballigh, this humble one had been sent abroad. How these four years passed, this is that period of my life whose beautiful memories will always remain with me as the best asset of my life. But these will be written about in some other sitting.

    ¶23

After these four years of working as a teacher in (Jamiat-ul-Mubashireen is its second name), my second posting was to Germany as a missionary of Islam. So, departing from Rabwah on some date in June 1964, I first reached Lahore along with my wife and both children. Abba Jaan was also with us so that upon my departure for Karachi, he could take my wife and children back with him to Rabwah. The scene that unfolded this time at Lahore Railway Station, I will never forget. The children happily accompanied us to the railway station. When I sat inside the train, the children were surprised that Abba Jaan was not taking them along. My daughter Hafsa understood the situation to some extent, but my son Zakariya's condition became distressed. He did not cry, but as soon as the train began to move, in a state of helplessness he started running alongside the train. I was watching him through the window. After all, how long could he keep running? When the train picked up speed, all the bonds of his patience broke open and he began to weep bitterly. My wife tells me that despite all kinds of comforting from Abba Jaan and myself, and despite being given toffees, machhiyan (fish-shaped sweets), and biscuits, the child could not be consoled. And then, until they reached back at Rabwah, the child remained in this same state. Only God knows what condition my wife and Abba Jaan themselves were in.

    ¶24

As the scene of Lahore disappeared from the train, I too became heavy-hearted, imagining the condition of the child. This trying state remained dominant over my heart and mind until I reached Karachi. Even afterwards, whenever this scene came before me, my condition would become distressed. However, as days, weeks and months passed, my heart did find some measure of peace.

My first stop in Germany was Masjid Noor Frankfurt. I arrived here on 20 or 21 June 1964. At that time, the Imam of Masjid Noor in Frankfurt was Mukarram Chaudhry Mahmood Ahmad Sahib Cheema. After spending a night or two with him, I set off for my next destination, namely Hamburg. The Masjid Fazl-e-Umar built in Hamburg is the first mosque that was built in Germany, in 1957. At that time, the Missionary-in-Charge, Maulvi Abdul Latif Sahib, was living there along with his family.....????

After staying in Hamburg for seven months and learning the German language, this humble one was transferred to Frankfurt. Here my practical missionary () life began. In this connection, the first function, the arrangements for which had already been made in advance by Mukarram Chema Sahib, was handed over to me upon my arrival....(My speech in the American Church of Frankfurt)......???

Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hadi Kiyosi Sahib's Acceptance of Islam

On the day that this humble one, upon arrival in Germany, after reaching Frankfurt, departed for Hamburg, on that very day (according to the record present in the Guest Book) in the evening an Italian friend, Doctor Italo Ciossi, came to the mosque. Mukarram Mahmood Ahmad Sahib Cheema welcomed him. And upon his coming inside, gave him a brief introduction of the Jamaat. He probably stayed in the mosque for only a few minutes. While leaving, he wrote his name and address on our Darul Tabligh's Guest Book, along with the following sentence in the Italian language, and went away:

    ¶29

'Today I have seen this mosque'

    ¶30

How this brief coming of his to the mosque became the cause of a transformation in his life is an interesting story. Shortly after I took charge as Imam of the Frankfurt mosque in February 1965, Mukarram Cheema Sahib went to Pakistan, and before leaving, he introduced me to this same Italian friend, saying that this friend comes to the mosque once a week to read Yassarnal Qur'an, that he has a keen interest in reading and learning Arabic. I asked, has he become a Muslim? He said, no. He simply wishes to learn the Arabic language. He also told me that since he did not have any book of Arabic, he had started teaching him Yassarnal Qur'an.

    ¶31

After Mukarram Cheema Sahib went to Pakistan, Mukarram Dr. Atalu Kiyosi Sahib (this was his name) would regularly come on Saturdays and Sundays, read Yassarnal Qur'an with me, and some informal conversation would also take place, and that was all. Yes, it was certain that, according to the well-known custom of the mosque at that time, a cup of tea would definitely be presented to him, which he would happily accept, and he would always say that your tea is very delicious. To repay this, he also made his own custom, and that was that he would bring a crate of beverages and place it in the mosque, saying that this is a humble gift from me for the friends of your Jamaat. Then, when the bottles were emptied, he would take that crate back, and in its place another crate filled with beverages would arrive. He never missed this custom even once.

    ¶32

Within a few months, he finished Yassarnal Quran. Now the question arose as to which Arabic book should be started. He himself said, what book could be better than the Holy Quran. Thus he now began reading the Holy Quran. I forgot to write that during the teaching of Qaida Yassarnal Quran, at his desire, I also began giving him lessons in Arabic grammar, because, as he had made clear, his real objective was to read Arabic. By the time Qaida Yassarnal Quran was finished and reading of the Quran began, he had already gained a fairly good command over Arabic grammar. So as soon as he began reading the Holy Quran, he said, tell me the meanings along with it as we go along. In this way, besides the practice of Nazira reading, he also gained command over the meanings. He would write down difficult words in his copybook. I would also tell him the root (madda) of the word, and also how and by what rule that word was formed from that root. In this way, I was also making him familiar with the rules of Arabic grammar, which increased his interest and his attachment to the Quran day by day.

    ¶33

After reading some Surahs along with their translation, Dr. Kiyosi Sahib one day said that he could now read the translation to some extent by himself, because he had translations of the Qur'an in several languages with him; however, in order to gain a good grasp over the meanings of the Holy Qur'an, he wanted to translate it into some such language in which no translation had been done before. He knew six languages. Of these, in five, translations had either already been published by our Jamaat or a translation was ready. However, there was one language, Esperanto, which he knew, but into which a translation had not yet been done. So he began translating the Qur'an into the Esperanto language. And along with this, he also continued the practice of reading the Holy Qur'an in the form of weekly lessons. Now, along with the meanings, I also began telling him some tafsir, so that the meaning of the verses might become well clear to him.

    ¶34

Haus in Mekka

While translating the Holy Quran into the Esperanto language, he would keep before him our German, English and French translations and the five-volume English tafsir. He would come to me every week and tell me that he had now completed translation to such and such an extent. He would translate and, along with it, would also keep typing it in the Esperanto language. At the time of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih III's first tour of Europe, which probably took place in July 1967, he had completed the translation up to twenty paras. The interesting details of how the reality of Islam was revealed to him during the course of the translation, and how he secretly accepted Islam in his heart and also began practising the prayer (namaz), are contained in his book written in the German language, Haus in Mekka.

    ¶35

It has already been published in, and for fear of length, is not being recorded here.

    ¶36

The interesting and faith-inspiring account of the manner in which he adopted complete abstinence from drinking wine has also been recorded by this humble one in the Urdu translation of this book, "Mera Hajj Baitullah." Here, in this connection, it seems necessary to mention his thoughts before he accepted Islam, so that readers may gauge how difficult it is for Westerners to change their religion, and particularly to accept Islam. What happened was that when he was still studying Yassarnal Quran, the month of fasting of 1966 arrived. A Pakistani friend, Mr. Khurshid Akbar Sahib, had asked me to break my fast at his house every day. His house at that time was not very far from the mosque, that is, it was located in a building at Wendels Platz, the third or fourth bus stop going from the mosque towards the city. One day, with his permission, I also took Mukarram Dr. K.C. Sahib along with me. Before entering the house, Mukarram Dr. Sahib asked me how I would introduce him to them (that is, to Akbar Sahib). In haste, a sentence escaped my mouth, the seriousness of which I could not gauge at that time, but I realized it later from Mukarram Dr. Sahib's letter. I said, I will say, 'This is our brother.' Upon hearing this, he remained silent.

    ¶37

This was Khursheed Akbar Sahib's first meeting with the said Doctor Sahib. Both expressed happiness at meeting each other. First there was Iftari. Then Akbar Sahib and I performed prayer in congregation (Akbar Sahib, despite not being an Ahmadi, would pray behind me as Imam). After this we ate food, and thus this brief gathering came to an end.

    ¶38

The next day I received a lengthy letter from Makarram Dr. Sahib, in which he first offered thanks for yesterday's invitation, then wrote: "Anwari Sahib! Consider me your friend or brother, whichever you deem appropriate. But if you have the notion that at some point I will change my religion and enter into your religion, this is impossible." And then, with a certain brevity, he wrote in it those family, social and departmental reasons of his own, in the presence of which even conceiving of abandoning his own Christian Roman Catholic faith and accepting Islam was difficult for him. I read the letter and placed it in the file. After that, we never spoke on this subject again, even by way of allusion. However, the routine of daily coming and going, and teaching and instruction, and joking and laughter continued as usual. But then, how it happened that after some time, in front of me but concealed from other friends, he recited the Kalima aloud in my presence and affirmed his becoming a Muslim, (and then, some time after that, after my return to the Markaz-e-Silsila, in front of my successor, Brother Masood Ahmad Sahib Jhelmi, marhoom, he openly proclaimed his acceptance of Ahmadiyyat) — this is an extraordinary, custom-breaking miracle, the full circumstances of which this humble one wishes to place before the readers, so that they may know that when Allah Ta'ala opens someone's heart for Islam, then how the difficulties that come in his way upon this path become easy for him.

    ¶40

They say that love and musk cannot remain hidden. Dr. K.C. Sahib, too, could not keep this state of turmoil in his heart concealed within his breast for very long. So one day, when he came to the mosque as usual, he began to say:

    ¶41

Anwari Sahib! Today I want to say a thing of secret, provided that it remains a secret between me and you. It is this: that I have accepted with a true heart that Islam alone is that real religion which can grant me peace of heart. I bring faith upon La ilaha illallah Muhammad-ur-Rasulullah, and I wish to spend my life as a Muslim. I have been offering Namaz for quite some time. (And in fact, as he himself has mentioned in his book, he had begun the practice of the five-time Namaz during the very course of the translation of the Quran. Naqil.) But I should have satisfaction that my movements and postures are correct. Therefore, in future, firstly I will offer Namaz in the mosque too, but concealed from other friends, and secondly, regarding the several kinds of questions that arise in my mind about the Arkan of Namaz, I will ask them from you.

From Doctor K.C. Sahib's this conversation, an overwhelming wave of joy ran through me. So, in accordance with his wish, I sought permission from him, with a promise to keep this secret confined to myself, to disclose it to Hazrat Aqdas Amir-ul-Momineen. After this, whenever he would come to the mosque, when the time for prayer arrived, he would close the door of the room and offer the prayer.

The story of the said Doctor Sahib giving up alcohol is as interesting as it is faith-inspiring. It was, I believe, in December 1966 that one day he came to the mosque as usual and said that Islam's command regarding the prohibition of alcohol appears to me to be based on great wisdom. Alcohol is such a thing whose harm, in actual fact, exceeds its benefit. And also because I am reading the Book of Allah, the Holy Qur'an, I wish to give up alcohol entirely (at that time he had not yet revealed to this humble one the state of his attachment to Islam). For this I need your help. I listened to what he said with great interest. He said, although very little alcohol is drunk in our house already, still, from the 1st of January 1967 I wish to make a pledge that henceforth not even a drop of it shall touch my mouth. He said, but since in the European environment alcohol is drunk very abundantly, and I myself, in connection with business, have to attend many such gatherings where the beginning itself is with alcohol and until the end it is alcohol upon alcohol that goes on, remaining within this environment and this atmosphere it is possible that at some time I might show weakness and break my pledge. Therefore you should ask me from time to time whether I am still standing firm on my pledge. And this fear—that if you ask, what answer shall I give—will restrain me from breaking my pledge. Because if I ever show weakness and, upon your asking, I confess to it, that will be a breach of pledge, which I do not like. And if I conceal my breach of pledge, that will be a lie, and I hate lying. I was utterly delighted at Doctor K. C. Sahib's this zeal for steadfastness and sincerity of intention. And then, in accordance with this promise, I would ask him from time to time. He too would answer, smiling, that all was well. After a few months passed, he said, I used to think that I had achieved a great feat, whereas no such difficulty ever arose at all. In this way the days kept passing.

Some time later, Doctor K.C. Sahib had occasion to go to his homeland, Italy. When he returned, I asked him how his time there had been. He said, "Once such an occasion arose that if I had not been afraid of what I would answer you when you asked, I would have made a mistake." When I asked further, he said that there, a family with whom we had old relations invited me, and prepared a very elaborate meal. After the meal, as is their custom, the master of the house presented wine and said that this had been specially procured for me. I made an excuse, but the lady of the house began insisting that I should at least taste a little. And I was close to drinking a sip or two just to please her, but then the thought of you came to my mind—what answer would I give if you asked me. So she kept insisting and I kept making excuses, until finally she herself fell silent.

As mentioned above, since secretly embracing Islam, Mukarram Doctor CQ Sahib had regularly started performing the five daily prayers. He would offer the daytime prayers at the office, and the night prayers, that is, Maghrib and Isha, he would offer at home before sleeping, closing the door of his room. Similarly, he would offer the Fajr prayer wherever the opportunity arose, whether at home or in the office. Now, when in that year the month of Ramadan came in December, he wished to keep the fasts. But another worry arose for him. It was that on Saturday and Sunday, when he would be at home, how would he be able to keep the fasts? Because not eating with the children at home during the day would expose his secret. So he came to me in a very worried state and said, "What should I do? As far as ordinary office days are concerned, I will have no difficulty in keeping the fast. According to the season, I have breakfast at home at the time when it is still the time for Sehri (in Germany, in December etc., the sun rises at 9 o'clock, and offices open at seven or eight o'clock). I eat lunch at the office, which I will not eat in case of fasting. By the time I eat dinner at home, the fast will already have been broken beforehand. The difficulty that appears is that on Saturday and Sunday, when the office is closed, I will necessarily have to eat lunch together with my wife and children. If I do not eat, the secret will be revealed. Now what should I do?" I said that in my opinion, the permission given in the Holy Quran for giving Fidyah, that in case of not being able to keep the fast, a poor person should be fed, could also apply to him. And Fidyah could also be given in the form of cash. Hearing this, he became very happy, and the very next day, after calculating the holidays that would fall during the blessed month of Ramadan, he brought the money and gave it to me, so that I might give it as Fidyah to some poor person on his behalf.

Until my return in December of that year, this secret of theirs remained hidden. And for some further period, they continued to practise Islam secretly, until the time came when, in accordance with the enabling grace granted by Allah Ta'ala, they themselves were compelled to lift the veil from it. At that time I was on my mission in Nigeria when I received this joyous letter that now they had become Muslim openly, and moreover had formally entered the Jamaat by taking , and that their Islamic name had been given as Muhammad Abdul Hadi. The name "Muhammad" is very dear to them. And Abdul Hadi was given because Allah Ta'ala Himself, by His grace, had guided them towards Islam. What greater happiness could there have been for me than this?

Meanwhile, the Esperanto translation of the Holy Quran had been completed and, under their own arrangement, had been printed and published. He wrote to me that he had placed an order with the publishing company to have three special copies prepared. Of these, one he was sending as a gift to the service of Hazrat Amir-ul-Momineen Khalifatul Masih the Third, Ayyadahullahu Ta'ala; the second was for this humble one; and the third he would keep with himself. Accordingly, after some time, this gift of his, in a beautiful binding, reached me in Lagos. In its preface, out of kindness, he had also recorded this humble one's name for the purpose of prayer.

It is with regret that his life did not remain faithful, and this true devotee of Islam and selfless servant of the Jamaat, only a few months after this humble one (khaksar) reached Germany in September 1972 as Missionary Incharge for the second time, departed from this transient world and joined his True Master. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un! His grave is present in Frankfurt's suburb Sachsenhausen, in the "Süd Friedhof" (South Cemetery), located between his house and Masjid Noor Frankfurt. Hazrat Aqdas Khalifatul Masih III (may Allah have mercy on him), during his 1976 tour of Germany, out of kindness went to the grave of the aforementioned doctor and also led prayers there.

Among the survivors of Doctor Cusi Sahib are his wife, a daughter Barbara, and a son Stefano. Barbara's marriage took place during his lifetime, but before his acceptance of Islam, to a German. His wife and son remain until now upon their former religion. May Allah Ta'ala create means for their guidance towards the religion of Islam. Ameen!
